One-on-One Basketball Rules

Prior to his most recent position as CEO of QLogic, Prasad Rampalli served as the senior vice president at EMC Solutions Group, where he led all aspects of their solutions transformation. During his university days, Prasad Rampalli was the captain of India Institute of Technology’s basketball team, and he still enjoys playing recreational one-on-one basketball.

One-on-one basketball is a competitive variety of the sport, often played in college intramural leagues. Though there are no official rules for one-on-one basketball, players follow a different set of rules than those followed in team basketball. Below are some typical rules observed in half-court, one-on-one basketball:

1. Games are played to 21 points, and must be won by at least two points.
2. Games are not timed, and there are no time-outs.
3. Players call their own fouls and violations.
4. Baskets count for one point. Baskets shot from outside of the three-point line are worth two points.
5. After a score, missed shot, or rebound, the player holding the ball must take it beyond the three-point mark before another basket can be scored. If the player fails to bring the ball past the three-point mark, the ball gets turned over to the opponent.
